The Past Month +/-

Hello!
So I just need to admit, I'm over winter. I'll try not to complain though.
They've been frozen at this stage for weeks.
Barbie is equally afflicted by spring fever. No stick, rabbit, deer, squirrel, chipmunk, or especially goose is safe. Poor thing is not pleased by my constant efforts to keep her mud free.
but I don't think she would give up her luxuriously upholstered lifestyle. So until July, when the lawn is dry again, she'll be constantly bathed.
the bread braiding has continued.
my friend Lindsay requested a "Yolanda Foster Power Coiffure". As a Real Housewives enthusiast, I was happy to deliver.

the salon entry has very ugly tile with a pinkish hue. It would have to be jackhammered out, so I painted over it. I used Kilz oil based primer. I've been remarkably impressed at how easily a painted white floor cleans. It also brings in so much more light. At $16 (including roller and tray!) it was an inexpensive and effective answer. A black rug is not my first choice...but with snow, rain, mud, and salt, it's my only option. I hope to switch it out in the summer for sisal. I have a frame in waiting for that painting, and hopefully soon I can declare the entry complete.

  1. Hey, there, Stephen! Well, it's snowing again in DC. Panda and Mocha can relate to Barbie!!! They can't wait for spring. Didn't know you can paint over tiles - thanks for sharing that. And lovely flower arrangements there - did you have a party? :)

    1. Haha well I'm not sure one really *should* paint over tile...but it seems to be working pretty well!

  4. Stephen Andrew you have a great eye and how clever to paint away the ugly. What can you do, the black rug is necessary for now, isn't this winter completely hideous and we need to brace ourselves it's going to be a muddy cool spring. I also have a puppy who is not enthusiastic about bathing even if keeping her clean is the goal of my life just now. I have a puppy spa set up for her in a bathroom we never use, you would love it.
    xox!

    1. Thank you so much! Oh it's just terrible! I am really trying not to complain. Haha especially because I would rather it be too cold than too hot...but I'm just so over it! I have a pretty easy doggie bathing setup but it's definitely not "spa" like :)

  5. I love your floral arrangements! The pink and green are such a lovely combination. So vibrant and springy! Your salon entrance looks a hundred times better with the floor painted white. I'd love to know how the paint is going to hold up, so please keep us posted ;) Hopefully the weather gets better soon so that your Barbie and my boys can go outside, run around, and get their energy out!

  8. I have painted tiles, too, Stephen! It is such a quick fix and after a couple of years I painted them again to freshen them up. I used car wax to protect them once they were painted. You can also paint tile in bathrooms-walls/showers, etc. with proper prep!
Look at that Barbie. She is so cute..and so big! xo Diana

  9. After only recently discovering you (via dear FF) I have been anxiously awaiting a new blog. Well worth the wait - everything you do is so colourful and tasteful. Your salon transformation is beautiful - you have such a good eye for beauty - having a lovely working environment will make it worth all the hard work. Seeing Barbie all wrapped up and cosy is so cute. Hopefully the worst is over re: winter. Here in Australia we cannot really appreciate how draining and severe your winters can be. My daughter worked in Michigan for a year and got to experience it all - quite a revelation for someone from Down Under.

    1. Thank you so much! That is so very kind. I just love FF's blog. I found her via Janet, The Gardener's Cottage. Did your daughter like Michigan? I live a few hours south of Michigan. Yes, the winters can be daunting. But I couldn't handle a scorching Australian summer!

    2. Yes my daughter loved Michigan - she worked just outside Detroit as a nanny and travelled around USA quite extensively. I visited her when she finished up and we covered a lot of the country before heading home. Chicago is one of my favourite cities in the world. We had record summer temperatures here in my city - including more than a week over 42C (107F) - but we are sort of used to it. Glad you are coming out of hibernation over there....

  10. Spring WILL be here before you know it! Until then, bring on those colorful indoor flower arrangements, they look beautiful. Oh, and the salon entry looks great, sometimes you have to go with practical over what you'd ultimately want, but the black entry rug does actually work. Besides, if you bring Barbie into the salon she will match your decor and shedding will not be noticeable lol.

    1. Thank you! Haha yes that is very true! Barbie often comes in with me on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and it's amazing how much of her hair shows up on that white floor!

  11. Now sharing that bread at 6.22am when there's no food in the house is very cruel indeed - I'm starving!
Spring will be with you soon, I'm sure of it then Barbie can go play! xxxx

    1. Thank you so much! I actually designed my logo when I was in 8th grade. At that time, I thought I wanted to design purses. Should you find yourself in Columbus, I would love to do your hair!

  16. Nice little touch-up in the entrance. It always amazes me what a little bit of paint can do!

Love your friend's new coif. I bet she left your salon with a big smile on her face. I'm a blonde and big hair never gets old LOL.

So Barbie has spring fever? Our glacier is retreating, and it's MESSY out there! Whoever said snow is white needs to do a double-take. It's filthy...I'm forever washing Odin's paws now too. Hope it doesn't take until July to dry out, though!

Love your braided loaf. I've got a new marzipan twist bread recipe to try out...but I've been a lazy baker in the past few months. It's time to get back into the saddle now that it's getting nicer outside. Hopefully I'll burn those baked-goods calories off.

  17. The painted tile looks WAY better. Genius idea! I could also envision a slim console in that entry… with some of your fabulous fresh flower arrangements. There's an outlet for light there too? eh!? Glad you're back to posting as well, and thanks for putting me on your blogroll. I'm honored!

  18. Seriously, winter has been a real bear this year!! I am so ready for spring too. Your salon looks wonderful - I never would have thought of painting tiles...live and learn! We have been working on a re-do of our living room...ack! Getting pretty tired of that too, but it's so much better. I've missed seeing Miss Barbie - she lives the life of a princess! Loved your comment on Karen's blog about her hair - awesome!!! If you moved to the west coast, you'd have a clientele waiting for you. :)
